The Top Attended Magnet Virtual Summit 2024 Sessions

We were extremely honored to have 60+ experts speaking at Magnet Virtual Summit! Of course, they all brought wonderful insight and interesting points to their presentations, but if you’re looking for a quick place to start with MVS recordings, here are the top five attended MVS 2024 sessions:

Mobile Unpacked Ep. 14 // Logging La Vida Loca
Chris Vance, Senior Technical Forensics Specialist, Magnet Forensics

Most modern electronic devices keep logs running that store information about who, what, when, where, and why processes are performed. Modern smartphones are certainly no different. In fact, certain artifacts can only be recovered by an in-depth review of these logging files. This talk will explore the different types of log files that can be found and how to extract them on iOS, Android, and Chromebook systems.

Wondering where you can get a copy of all the locations and types of logging data you can gather in your investigations? Look no further than this blog post from Chris.

Tales from the Trenches: How Bad Digital Forensics Threatens
Jason Jordaan, Principal Forensic Analyst, DFIRLABS

A lot of digital forensic practitioners go and testify in court, with their evidence getting in without significant challenges, usually from unknowledgeable legal practitioners. In some of these cases the digital forensic practitioners have gotten the evidence wrong, leading to wrongful convictions or other incorrect liability being allocated. While opposition digital forensic practitioners are often frowned upon, especially from law enforcement, they do play a valuable role in balancing the interests of justice, and often can play a role in ensuring good quality digital forensics.

Through a discussion of three cases, one criminal, and two civil, the presenter will show how digital forensic evidence presented by either an unqualified or biased digital forensic practitioner almost destroyed the lives of the parties in court, and how a proper scientific approach to digital forensics assisted in the courts in achieving justice.

Mobile Forensic Images – Getting the Right Data
Jessica Hyde, Founder, Hexordia LLC

Mobile forensic data acquisitions vary greatly and involve changing dynamics between the device and the data that is present. Join Jessica Hyde of Hexordia as we explore the different methodologies and the evolving relationship between mobile devices and their stored data.

We’ll address two fundamental questions: What types of acquisitions are possible? And what type of data is available to analyze? We will discuss these questions and how they apply in different environments from enterprise to law enforcement.

In this presentation, we’ll dive deep into the distinctive facets of mobile data acquisitions and data insights, from live-stream collection to logical extractions and even full file system extractions facilitated by tools such as Magnet GRAYKEY and Magnet VERAKEY. We’ll talk about the nuances of each extraction method and the need to consider various approaches in digital investigations based on the data available to determine the best methodology to provide you with essential data to analyze. Jessica will share compelling examples that shed light on when a full file system extraction is indispensable and the data insights that can be derived from this process.
